First she went wheeling and now this?! The big white whale is really gettin' a run for her money lately :p

towingboat.jpg

She pulled it pretty damned good. Granted there were no really big hills, just a few minor ones. But it did pretty good. Pulling up the boat ramp was cake, which made me happy.

Did have 1 issue when I tried to back it up our long, narrow, winding driveway. Had to retry it several times and then my brother tried it a couple times and shouted out on my PA "Your transmission is really hot" :headbang:

Had to call it quits at that point and let my brother use his truck to back it up.

Hey on the note of my tranny getting hot... I got up near 220* or more... I know that's starting to get into nasty territory but will it cause a problem if it was only running that hot for a short period of time.

What's that boat weigh, Chris? Looks like it's not squatting the rear of the truck much, but I'm guessing boats tend to be pretty light on the hitch for their weight.

It's nonscientific and I hope somebody can give you a better answer soon...but if it was me I'd pull the dipstick and make sure it doesn't smell burned at all, anyway.

Our best guess is that it weighs in excess of 7000 lbs with a tongue nearing 800-1000. It did squat my truck a little bit but not much-- my rear springs are pretty stiff with the AAL's.

Good call. Why didn't I think of that 'smiliedoh'

Looks like you got 'er done. Looks good too. YelloThumbUp

I like having older trucks out on the road doing the work that people would only otherwise try with a new truck.

Backing up a trailer is quite an art. Don't feel like a dope if you can't do it yet. Took me a long time to get the hang of it.

As for your tranny, 220F is a little hot, but I wouldn't worry about it.

And I hate to say it, but yuo do have a damn nice truck.

Nah I know how to back up a trailer. It's just the danged driveway. It's long and narrow and curved, and surrounded by trees on both sides so you have to keep it EXACTLY between the lines or else you'll start taking down trees.

Why do you hate to say it?! :guns: :p

Not sure if you might have done this, but...

Whenever I back trailers in tight places with my friend's F-350, I put the t-case in 4-low so I can go slower without tearing up the clutch. (He does the same.)

I'm actually not positive that would keep an automatic transmission any cooler, but I think it would. I KNOW it's easier on the clutch if you're going slow.

I put it 2-low when I brought the boat up the ramp (just in case). Not sure if it would keep it cooler-- it turns the engine at higher RPMs but I suppose that could mean it's getting the TC closer to being fully locked? [confused]

Yeah...obviously with a manual, it lets you go slower with the clutch fully engaged. I don't really have any idea whether or not it would help with the automatic. Probably wouldn't hurt, at any rate. (Maybe higher RPM => more flow => lower fluid temps...I dunno?)

haha.. congrats on finally using the truck as a truck Chris..

Wanna pull our camper next? 34ft fifth wheel. If I remember right it's right at 10k empty, and probably closer to 12k loaded. :D

Reminds me of yesterday, seeing your truck hooked up like that..

Some guy in a Chevy 1500 4x4, bout a late 80's model was pulling a trailer with bout 6 round bales of hay. He turned the corner in front of us and the more he stood on the skinny pedal the more blue smoke he was leaving behind him... when I turned off he was out of sight (i slowed down and let him go on) and nothing but a trail of smoke 1/8th mile behind him. it was hilarius :rofl:

Gotta make do with what ya got I guess...

I was going to suggest the low lock, it gives gear multiplication benefits, so it will be easier on the converter. It should not lock up the converter in low lock either... 220 shouldn't burn the oil just yet, I know some motors are designed to run at that temp normally. If the oil were to scorch that easy, it isn't very good oil.

I don't know what "hot" is on an auto tranny, but the autometer gauges for the tranny temp go up to 250 deg. On some gauges 220 deg is a little less than halfway on the meter.

Everybody stole my thunder. Since you have manual hubs I would use 4 lo (with the hubs unlocked) whenever I was backing a trailer in tight conditions. Reverse is not a strong gear in an auto trans and by putting your transfer in 4 lo you in essence turn your 4:10 gear into an 8:20 gear.

Does your boat trailer have surge brakes and is your drive an uphill grade? If so, there's a place to put a pin in the hitch that will disable the brakes for such conditions.

Now, last but not least....... YOU SUCK!!!! How dare you post a picture of your truck hitched up to your boat!!! I was going to get mine out and de-winterize it yesterday.

Ooo neat, I've never heard of that. Yeah it has surge brakes (not a good idea to have electric brakes on a submersible boat trailer).
