"97" Explorer 4.0 OHV head gasket repair

Let me start by saying...the last time I replaced head gaskets was on a 1964 Buick ... with that said Folks, I have been told that I would have to pull the engine, but I don't think that is correct, I cant see why I would have to do that ....Is there anything that I should know up front...RJ

Removal

Relieve the fuel pressure; refer to Section 310-00 .
Remove the lower intake manifold; refer to the procedure in this section.
Drain the cooling system; refer to Section 303-03 .
Remove the fan blade and fan shroud; refer to Section 303-03 .
Remove the top radiator hose and tube.
Squeeze hose clamps and position aside.
Remove the top radiator tube bolt.
Remove the radiator top hose.

Remove the accessory drive belt.
Rotate the drive belt tensioner counterclockwise.
Remove the drive belt.

Disconnect the generator electrical connectors.

Remove the three bolts and the generator bracket.

Remove the bolts and position the engine accessory bracket aside.

Disconnect the camshaft position sensor (CMP) electrical connector.

Disconnect the coil pack electrical connector.

Disconnect the radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connector.

Disconnect the engine electrical connector.

Disconnect the differential pressure feedback EGR (DPFE) transducer.
Disconnect the electrical connector.
Disconnect the vacuum hoses.

Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) electrical connector.

Remove the electrical harness bolt.

Disconnect the water temperature indicator sender and the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connectors.

Disconnect the LH fuel injector electrical connectors.

Disconnect the RH fuel injector electrical connectors.

Position the engine wiring harness aside.

Remove the EGR upper tube nut.

Remove the EGR valve bracket bolt and remove EGR valve.

Remove the two heater hoses bracket bolts and disconnect the transmission dipstick tube.

Remove the upper heater hose.
Squeeze the heater hose clamp.
Remove the heater hose.

Remove the lower heater hose.
Remove the heater valve bracket bolt.
Squeeze the hose clamp.
Remove the heater hose.

Compress the thermostat housing by-pass hose clamp and position aside.

Remove the three thermostat housing bolts and remove the housing.

Disconnect the RH spark plug wires.

Disconnect the LH spark plug wires.

Remove the fuel line two upper bracket bolts.

Remove the four bolts and the fuel injection supply manifold.

Remove the bolts and the LH valve cover.

Remove the bolts and the RH valve cover.

Remove the six fuel injectors.

Remove the crankcase vent separator spring steel clip and remove the separator.

Remove bolt and the engine oil dipstick housing.

Raise and support the vehicle; refer to Section 100-02 .
Remove the LH exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe bolts.

Remove the RH exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe bolts.

Lower vehicle.
Remove the LH hydraulic chain tensioner.

Remove the LH camshaft sprocket bolt.

Remove the LH cassette retaining bolt.

Remove the eight 12 mm bolts and two 8 mm bolts in sequence and remove the LH cylinder head.
Discard the gasket.

CAUTION: The RH exhaust manifold must be removed before the cylinder head to avoid breaking camshaft cassette.

Remove the nuts and the RH exhaust manifold.

Remove the RH hydraulic chain tensioner.
Gain access to the chain tensioner through the RH fender well.

CAUTION: Right hand camshaft sprocket bolt is left handed threaded bolt.

Use Cam Gear Torque Adapter Tool to remove RH camshaft sprocket bolt.

Remove the RH cassette retaining bolt.

CAUTION: Must remove camshaft sprocket from chain and cassette, to gain clearance to remove cylinder head, to avoid breaking cassette.

NOTE: Hold the chain and cassette with a rubber band to aid removal and prevent the chain from falling into the cylinder block.

Remove the RH camshaft sprocket from the cassette.

Remove the eight 12 mm bolts in sequence and the two 8 mm bolts and remove the RH cylinder head.
Discard the gasket.

Removal

Discharge and recover the A/C system; refer to Section 412-03 .
Remove the lower intake manifold; refer to the procedure in this section.
Remove the A/C manifold tube bolt and separate the A/C manifold tube from the A/C compressor.

Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.

Remove the A/C compressor bracket bolts and position the A/C compressor bracket aside.

Disconnect the three generator electrical connectors.

Disconnect the heater hose retaining clip and position the heater hose aside.

Remove the generator bracket bolts and the generator bracket.

Remove the LH and RH exhaust manifold; refer to the procedure in this section.
CAUTION: If the rocker arm shaft is not loosened gradually, the shaft may become bent during removal.

Remove the rocker arm shaft bolts and the RH rocker arm shaft.

NOTE: Mark the position of the parts so they can be installed in their original position.

Remove the RH push rods.

CAUTION: If the rocker arm shaft is not loosened gradually, the shaft may become bent during removal

Remove the rocker arm shaft bolts and the LH rocker arm shaft.

NOTE: Mark the position of the parts so they can be installed in their original position.

Remove the LH push rods.

NOTE: The LH cylinder head is shown the RH cylinder head is similar.

Remove the cylinder head bolts and remove thecylinder head and gasket.
